Speech Delays
A child's first words are seen as a developmental milestone, as a symbol of verbal communication and/or social interaction with others. Yet, within this spectrum, concerns arise because some children may not demonstrate speech acquisition, articulation, and development early on.
Do you think that more children are encountering speech delays? Are boys more likely to show greater speech delays or development than girls? Come Discuss!

Default 28 month old not really talking

Hi All-

My 28 month old son (first born) has only one true word ***." He does make several word approximations, such as "par" for park, etc. He has been seeing a speech therapist weekly for the past 3 months, but has made only a little progress. He's starting to sound out syllables (if I say, "say turtle", he'll say "ta ta".) His consonants are P, M, B, D, T, C.

I can't help but compare him to his friends, who are speaking full sentences. He understands everything, but gets frustrated when I can't understand his needs. (though he's getting great at sign language).

My husband was a late talker, and he and the rest of my family think I'm crazy. So, am I? I'm going out of my head with worry, I just want him to be normal.

Do you think he's on track to speaking and just a little slow to talk, or is something else going on?

Thanks for reading. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi laureninma,
It sounds like your son does have a speech delay as he should be saying sentences. Some children do start to talk at a later age but it is always important to observe them and get additional support for them when they fall behind. You should continue to provide him with support and encourage his efforts to communicate. Here is a link to speech development and delays http://www.aplaceofourown.org/questi...ail.php?id=263 I hope you find it useful.
Best,
Alba

It is very hard to not be able to communicate with someone, especially your own child. Has the therapist worked with any hand signs for communication? How about a picture board or picture cards? I would make sure you are communicating with the therapist about what you can do at home. Have you seen any signs of progress since speech therapy has started? If you don't feel like you are making any progress, you may wish to get a 2nd opinion from another therapist.

How have other parents dealt with the frustration?
